Thinking Out Loud
I see where the immortal Hank Steinbrenner lit into his Yankees again. He couldn't take it as the Yankee offense has gone to sleep against Texas. Hank is missing the point, as usual. The Yankees are going to hit. They will score plenty of runs. The offense is not a long-term problem. If Hanks wants to make himself useful, he will get out there and find some pitching. The trade deadline is coming up at the end of the month and the Yankees need at least one more starter and a few middle relievers. I have never seen a team with so many pathetic relievers. Mariano Rivera is the only guy down there you can trust in a close game. The danger here is overworking Mariano to cover for all the stiffs in the bullpen. As far as Hank goes, the guy is a clown....
As expected, Brett Favre is on his way back to the Packers. I am surprised it took this long. But I am sure I know what happened. Once it became July 1st and Favre realized training camp was right around the corner, he couldn't take it anymore. This is what happens when you retire too early. Favre was great last season and the Packers have a good young team. When Favre retired a few months ago, he knew he could still play. The question about athletes retiring has always been this: Is it better to retire one year too early or one year too late? Without a doubt, it is better to retire one year too late. This way, you go out knowing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are done. At this point, there is no looking back...
Favre was very frustrated when the Packers lost the NFC Championship game at home to the Giants. Perhaps this frustration triggered his retirement. He has had the whole summer to think about it and now knows he still must play. Actually, I said this all along...
Keep an eye on Redskins QB Jason Campbell. This guy is going to be a great quarterback. Head Coach Jim Zorn , a former QB himself, has worked long and hard with Cambell all summer. Campbell has a big arm and good mobility. The Redskins have surrounded him with a good line, some fast recievers, and RB Clinton Portis. The Skins will be very good this season... --The Shot Doctor

The Los Angeles Clippers have been around for a long time. For the majority of that time, they have been a bad team. 2 years ago, the Clippers had their best team in a long time. Then, the injury bug set in last year. Elton Brand tore his achilles tendon before last season began, and the Clippers were doomed. But this is the most important time in Clipper history. Free agency is here, and the Clippers can go a couple of ways. If done correctly and aggressively, this could be a team for the ages...
Swingman Corey Maggette and power foward Elton Brand, the 2 best players on the Clippers, have opted out of their contracts. They are now free agents. The Clippers need to make a statement here. They must step up and resign both of these guys. In the past, the Clippers have gone the cheap route and let their best players sign elsewhere. This is a different time, however. With center Chris Kaman and young Al Thornton on board, the pieces are here for a championship. That is, if Maggette and Brand are resigned...
Once that is accomplished, it is time for the Clippers to go after point guard Baron Davis. Davis is a free agent after opting out of his contact at Golden State. It will probably take a sign and trade deal to pull this off. Davis is one of the premier point guards in the NBA. Anyway, if it all comes together and the Clippers decide to go for it, they could become a force. Or they simply could repeat past failures and let Brand and Maggette sign elsewhere. The NBA would be an even better league if the Clippers became championship contenders...
I am not surprised to hear Alex Rodriguez drop out of the All Star Game Home Run Derby. Actually, I do not blame him. A-Rod is afraid of ruining his swing trying to hit homers. This happened to Bobby Abreu a few years ago. Abreu claims the Home Run Derby ruined his swing in the second half of the season. A-Rod is swinging great right now and does not want to develop any bad habits. --The Shot Doctor
Rounding The Bases....

The baseball season has reached the halfway point. A few observations...
The best team in Chicago is the White Sox. As good as the Cubs have been, the White Sox have the pitching to go a long way. They have 5 solid starters in Mark Buerhle, Javier Vazquez, Jose Contreras, Jonn Danks, and Gavin Floyd. Their bullpen has been fabulous, with closer Bobby Jenks leading the way. The White Sox have one of the hottest hitters in baseball in Jermaine Dye. Manager Ozzie Guillen can be out of control at times, but he was the same way in 2005 when the Sox went all the way. The Cubs must make a big trade in the next few weeks for a starting pitcher. The White Sox have enough pitching right now....
Another marvelous managing job is being done in St. Louis by Tony LaRussa. Along with pitching coach Dave Duncan, LaRussa has put together a pitching staff beyond expectations. To begin with, Chris Carpenter and Mark Mulder have yet to start a game due to injury. Adam Wainwright has been solid, but look at the guys after him in the rotation. Todd Wellemeyer, Kyle Lohse, and Braden Looper have come up big. The Cardinals will have to upgrade the bullpen to hang in there, but they have always been an aggressive trading team around the deadline...
The Minnesota Twins have been a tremendous story. They have won 11 of their last 12. But as good as they have been, I don't see them becoming a playoff team. They do not have enough power. Trading for Delmon Young was supposed to boost their power, but it's not working yet. They need one more starting pitcher. The Twins have always been a good defensive team and this year is no exception. But they will not be one of the American League's top 5 teams in October. ---The Shot Doctor
