Florida nursing homes must have generators.

Governor Rick Scott travels to Fort Myers to sign bills requiring nursing homes and assisted living facilities to have back up generators. It's the state's response to the death of 12 seniors at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills after Hurricane Irma knocked out their air conditioning. Scott imposed emergency rules on the entire industry after it happened.

"I expect everybody to have backup power and fuel," Gov. Scott said. "There will be fines of $1,000 a day and the risk of losing your license."

With the signing of these bills, those emergency rules are now permanent. Nursing homes and adult living facilities have to have a backup generator that can keep residents cool for at least four days during a blackout.
